In the spring of 2018, production duo Kristoffer and Albin flew to Los Angeles to write new songs with Tim “Avicii” Bergling. One of the results of this time together was “SOS”. "The songs we wrote were about having been in a dark place, but then coming up from that place. Rising. We thought Tim had done that,” says Kristoffer.
When Tim passed away in Oman on April 20, 2018, the music was 90 percent ready. At the wishes of the family, Albin and Kristoffer were tasked with completing it. Through the program Fruity Loops, they were able to track and preserve Tim's exact keystrokes. The result: Tim's fingerprints literally across the entirety of "SOS".
In personal notes recovered after his passing, Tim spoke about wanting to team up once again with Aloe Blacc, the American vocalist he worked with on the smash hit, "Wake Me Up", so Kristoffer and Albin invited him to record the track.
After hearing Aloe sing on the track, Albin and Kristoffer were convinced; he captured the spirit of the project. Sleek and modern, the song is built on Aloe Blacc’s soaring voice and dually spare but brightly layered pop production. For many, Blacc is the voice of Avicii, and for Blacc, these lyrics, “Give people the words to be able to say ’I need help.’”
